Show- ART

No Room For Squares!

"No Room For Squares"- acrylic on canvas. 30cm x 41cm

After Hank Mobley's title-track from his 1963 Blue Note album.

Hank Mobley was a tenor saxophonist from the Art Blakey/ Horace Silver school of blues infused bebop jazz called "hard bop". The hard bop movement balanced sophistication with soulfulness, complexity and an earthy swing.

Big John's Special

"Big John's Special"- Digital print. (Most likely on stretched vinyl).

After the old skool big band swing number originally composed by Horace Henderson and recorded by his brother, Fletcher Henderson.

Fletcher Henderson had what most people regarded as the best African-American jazz big band of the 1920's. His smooth jazz sound gave birth to the Swing style of the next decade.

Hendersons band disbanded due to his poor business acumen however he was soon picked up by the then young Benny Goodman and his orchestra as the bands arranger.
The combination of the tight, disciplined Goodman orchestra with Henderson's hot swinging jazz arrangements rocketed Goodman to worldwide fame as "The King of Swing".

Popular music and culture was forever changed.
